Joyce Hawes C.S. came into Christian Science as a child after her sister was healed of polio. She graduated from Connecticut College for Women with a degree in music, where she helped to start a Christian Science college organization. She assisted her husband, Joseph Heard, CSB, in his work as a practitioner and teacher of Christian Science, serving as his secretary and administrative assistant for 28 years. Joyce also accompanied her husband when he was a lecturer for ten of those years, visiting 46 states and 35 countries. During this time she continued her active practice.
She has served in a number of capacities in branch church work, including First and Second Reader, Board member, Sunday School Superintendent, and has especially loved being a Sunday School teacher for many years.
